A mercury porosimeter is a device that operates with the principle of determining pore size, pore size distribution, pore volume, porosity, surface area and mass densities in solid and powder samples. It is based on the principle that a reactive and non-wetting fluid such as mercury can not enter into fine pores unless enough pressure is applied. The relationship between the pore diameter and the applied pressure is obtained by the Washburn equation. It has three sample reservoirs with 2 low pressures (up to 50 psi) and 1 high pressure (up to 33,000 psi). Pore diameters between 6.4 nm and 950 μm can be measured.
